Lost in the forest and sick of fish? Here are some tips for you how you can lay snares to get some real meat. IMPORTANT: Laying snares is forbidden in most of the countries of the EU and they are only allowed in emergencies. Moreover, you should always remove your snare after having caught some food. Nature is made for togetherness not for being against each other.

  1. Bird strings: Get a long string (about 5m). It has to be very thin, but also soft and elastic. Every 30cm-50cm you attach a bait onto the string. Start at one end of the string. It’s best to take berries or corn kernels. The other end is attached with a thick branch or a root. Then wait. After a while, a bird will come and will start eating the bait. It will swallow the string. When it starts flying, it will get stuck and will asphyxiate.
  2. Rabbit snares: If you look carefully around you, you will find rabbits on paths in the forest or on meadows. The grass there is a little pushed in. If you find some of these paths, start creating nooses. They should have a diameter of your palm or even a little smaller. After that fix the loops on these paths with some branches. When the rabbits walk into them, they will become entangled and they will strangle themselves or you can do this part quickly by yourself.
  3. The barrier trap: This must be the simplest method which even works. First, dig a ditch. Then, crash a big, heavy branch on a smaller one. After that, you tie a string and a decoy onto the smaller branch. The string will be pulled away together with the decoy when an animal starts pulling at it. The barrier will fall down and will kill it.

IMPORTANT! Practicing traps is also illegal in Germany. It should be only your last solution you have in mind, because it can be very harrowing for the animals. You also have to remove your smells from the decoys so that they can be effective. It’s best to rub them with some leaves or plants.
