Zwischen den 30er und 60er Jahren war es Gang und Gebe, in kosmopolitischen Großstädten wie London und Paris Damen mit Groß- und Wildkatzen an Leinen zu sehen. Geparden, Luchse, Leoparden, Karakal liefen neben ihren gut betuchten Besitzern her. Zu den prominentesten dieser zählt Dali, welcher einen handzahmen Ozelot besaß.
Da dies nicht nur unglaublich ästhetisch war, sondern es auch öfter zu Unfällen kam, wobei die Katzen Tiere und Menschen angriffen, wurde dies Ende der 60er Jahre in Mitteleuropa verboten. Groß- und Wildkatzen durften nur noch in Käfigen gehalten werden (was nicht minder quälend für die Tiere war).
Viele Besitzer entschieden sich jedoch, ihre Lieblinge lieber auszusetzen, sodass ihnen der Käfig erspart blieb. Bis heute gibt es Gerüchte über große Katzen, die im Umland von London und Paris ihr Unwesen treiben, Kühe töten, Kinder fressen und auch sonst stören durch ihr lautes Gebrüll. In den meisten Fällen handelt es sich hierbei jedoch um absichtliche Falschmeldungen.
In den arabischen und nordafrikanischen Ländern sowie in Russland, ist es bis heute jedoch Mode, sich einen exklusiven Jagdgefährten zu halten. So gibt es Berichte über reiche Ölscheichs, die wie vor hunderten Jahren mit ihren treuen Geparden auf Antilopen-Jagd machen und dabei Bilder für Instagram und Facebook schießen. Den Vogel hat jedoch ein russischer Oligarch abgeschossen, welcher seine zwei Löwenkitten nur mit Haifischfleisch und Kaviar füttert.

From the 30ies to the 60ies, it was something completely ordinary, if you saw someone taking their carnivorous wild and big cat for a walk with a leash. Cheetahs, lynxes, leopards, caracals followed their fearless and above all wealthy owners. One of the most famous owners of a wild cat was Dali who possessed a tamed ocelot.
Since this wasn’t only incredibly aesthetic and hip, but led to many accidents and cats attacking people, keeping wild cats was finally forbidden at the end of the 60ies in Central Europe. Big and wild cats were only allowed to be kept in cages from then on, which however was even more excruciating for the poor animals.
Many owners however decided to abandon their cats instead of forcing them to lead a life in a cage. Due to this common practice, there still are many rumors about big cats roaming the outer conurbation area of London and Paris. It is said that they still kill cows, eat children and bother people with their loud growling. In most cases however, the reports were just hoaxes.
In Arabic and North African countries as well as Russia, it is still en vogue to have an exclusive hunting buddy as a pet. Thus, there are many cases of rich oil sheiks who went hunting antelopes with their loyal cheetahs. Of course, an oil sheik doesn’t allow anyone to take away his opportunity to upload some pictures of his hunting trip on Instagram and Facebook to brag. On oligarch however really brought it to the top, when he fed his two lion cubs shark meat and caviar.
