A secure and sturdy camp is incredibly important if you want to survive out there. Not only will you find a piece of tranquillity in there to calm down and sleep, you can also store your equipment  and actually make sure to get noticed in case you get lost.

The important thing about a suitable camp is the location. It has to be visible from the air in case a helicopter is on the lookout for you and of course it should be sheltered from the wind and weather. A source of fresh water should be reachable from your camp. If you are planning a vacation in European and subarctic zones, look for steep faces, because they offer the best shelter from wind and more importantly: rain.

Another very important factor is the fireplace. Be sure to keep it burning because once it’s out it’s going to need its time to light up again, especially if you’re not sufficiently equipped.  It also will keep away predators during the night if you are on their hunting ground. And, of course, you should keep your latrine a couple metres away for obvious reasons.

To keep away intruders if an animal does dare to come near you, prepare some alarms with the aid of strings and tins that make a lot of noise. If you want to be even more prepared, create SOS and HELP signs with stones and sticks and indicate through arrows to your location.
