Nowadays a dance ball is still something very special for us: an event full of glitz and glamor, which makes it the best opportunity for us women to really dress up and to feel like a princess. Beautiful dresses are priority and are combined with precious hairstyles and stunning makeup. Dancing is still a huge part of the event, it is however not very much the entire focus anymore. Instead, a dance ball is mostly about celebrating and carefree social interaction.

But where does the so-called dance ball come from and what was the reason why such an event was so popular and important in the past?

In the 17th century the term ‘ball’ was taken from the French word ‘baller’, which translates as dancing. Once upon a time, the dance ball used to be an important element on the marriage market. Only selected members of the upper class of society were invited and saw it as an opportunity to select their future wives or husbands. Rich famlies usually had their own dance houses, where ball events took place regularly. Therefore it was particularly important to attract attention with a stunning dress and stand out from the crowd.
