John Niven (born in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland, 1968) is a Scottish author. He graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1991. After that, he worked for various music labels and a media company named “PolyGram” as the Marketing Manager. When the new millennium began, he left the music business though and began writing. I think “Kill our Friends” is his best work and that’s what he also thinks.

Kill your Friends” is about an egocentric major music label manager thirsting for success, who would do everything to increase his wealth and to lower his coworkers’ – they’re his competitors in his opinion.

Drugs, power, money and women are everything that counts and however still believes in the good of major record labels gets their ignorance beaten out of them by the author’s insider knowledge.

It’s 1997, the music industry is booming, the internet is still far from what it is now and the CDs are selling better than ever. But when the main character Steven Steelfox realizes he can’t keep up with his coworkers’ successes, he comes up with an own plan. Of course his plan is going wrong and not only is his life and career at risk because of that, his whole environment also is.

It’s a tough book to read about a tough and dirty truth – it’s absolutely worth a read. A crime thriller which also displays social criticism in a really interesting story!
