We are drawn by the morbid and the grotesque like bees round the honey pot. The Sick Rose is a very nice book to fulfill our need for bizarre and gross. On the one hand, it is truly sickening and disturbing, on the other hand however it indeed can be educational and informative. How is this possible? The answer is simple: The Sick Rose is a historical medical book, containing drawings from the 18th and 19th century, documenting a young and blond boy affected by pulmonary tuberculosis for instance. How about a nice illustration of what leprosy can do to us if it doesn’t get treated? The big medical discoveries during this time are captured in the book as well. But of course, the pictures are what make this book fascinating. In the end, we can learn something from the Sick Rose and once again are reminded of how lucky we are to live in this modern century.

The Sick Rose is a book for everyone who likes it morbid and macabre. Enjoy the drawings!
