„SHE WAS YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL BUT NOW SHE IS BATTERED AND DEAD. SHE IS NOT THE FIRST AND SHE WILL NOT BE THE LAST I LAY AWAKE NIGHTS THINKING ABOUT MY NEXT VICTIM. MAYBE SHE WILL BE THE BEAUTIFUL BLOND THAT BABYSITS NEAR THE LITTLE STORE AND WALKS DOWN THE DARK ALLEY EACH EVENING ABOUT SEVEN. OR MAYBE SHE WILL BE THE SHAPELY BRUNETT THAT SAID XXX NO WHEN I ASKED HER FOR A DATE IN HIGH SCHOOL. BUT MAYBE IT WILL NOT BE EITHER. BUT I SHALL CUT OFF HER FEMALE PARTS AND DEPOSIT THEM FOR THE WHOLE CITY TO SEE. SO DON’T MAKE IT TO EASY FOR ME…”

“The Zodiac Killer” – that the name a serial murderer once went by. He ran rampant in San Fransisco between the years of 1968 and 1969. Just so you know: he was never captured.

The disconcerting thing about him was that he used to write coded letters to local newspapers in which he boasted about his crimes and announced his future plans. The letters were partly put together in codes, often with symbols from the Middle Age. His self-appointed name refers to the symbols of the zodiac.

His victims were often young couples who hung out at relatively empty places in San Francisco Bay. Survivals and witnesses described the culprit as being clothed in black, covered up by a long coat and hangman hood. On his chest, there would be a big zodiac symbol.

Zodiac used to send parts of his victims’ clothing to newspapers such as the Chronicle up until 1974. His identity was never confirmed, and the number of victims remains unclear. Officially they were seven victims, but Zodiac’s letters claimed he had murdered 37 people. Usually, he would stab his victims with knives and take away their clothing.

Arthur Leigh Allen was caught by the police in 1971 and remained their main suspect. However, they were not able to prove that he did indeed commit these crimes – until 2002, when a DNA test confirmed that Arthur Leigh Allen’s saliva was found on the Zodiac’s letters and stamps.

But Arthur Leigh Allen had already died in 1992, at the ripe old age of 58.
