Clumsy people are often called “elephants”, right? This sounds really far-fetched, because elephants are definitively not clumsy. Yes, they are big, very big and yes, they can be really dangerous (especially bulls during the rut or mothers that are with their calves). Anyways, elephants are very sensitive and delicate beings.

Here are some examples!

  1. 1. Elephants can die of grieving! When an elephant experiences a traumatic event, it might stop to eat until it dies. Mothers often stop eating when they give birth to a stillborn child or when fellow members of their herd die.
  2. 2. Elephants are very artistic. They like drawing pictures. Different animals have different styles. Some of them paint expressionistically, others are more accurate. However, the art is always abstract, but you can still find emotions in them. Attention! Especially in Thai parks, elephants are forced to paint. They are even beaten to do so. Only buy pictures that are approved by animal welfare organizations.
  3. 3. Elephants take care that they don’t trample smaller beings or damage objects. There are even pictures of them where they stalk over fences so that they don’t destroy them.
  4. 4. Elephants are offered “kindergartens” where stressed mothers can give their children to aunties in order to enjoy a mud bath.

Elephants are very emotional animals. They do have feelings just like humans. The next time someone is doing something clumsy, don’t call him/her elephant. That would be very insensitive.
