I love establishments like the ”Knese”. This location is definitely a place with traditional home-made food and contemplation. You’ll find this eatery in the Knesebeckstraße near Kudamm. It’s already very inviting from the outside with the rustic and foggy leaded windows. My visit was also on a Sunday, a peaceful Sunday.
At the time when you enter this location and leave those black curtains behind you at the entry, you’ll also leave the hectic city life behind you. The longish dining area on the left provides a platform with seven small tables. In this way the dining area marked out the rest of the restaurant and the regulars’ tables although, you can choose and enjoy your food everywhere.
The bar area, which welcomes you right after you entered the location is incredibly rustic. You won’t see this kind of bar so easily. In my opinion, it embodies the flair of the old West-Berlin. You may expect this kind of restaurant in Bavaria with its’ conviviality. Here you can talk about ”God and the world”. With dishes like German meatballs in caper sauce, Berliner Kalbsleber (calf’s liver), marinated lamb skewer and vegetarian dishes like wild mushroom ragout. It has everything a Berlin heart desires for.
We had crispy fried perch with stewed cucumber and sesame-potatoes, combined with rocket salad and knuckle of pork (Schweinshaxe) with malt beer sauce, Bavarian cabbage and a bread dumpling which was big as a childs’ head! Solid, flavorful and tasty food, it was delicious!
I was totally satisfied. What was left on the plates reminds someone of a battlefield. Watching my company eating resembled an archaic venture. Just when we wanted to leave, the table next to us got their order: ”Eisbein”. Well, it looked like a mountain on a plate with a grassland of sour cabbage beneath it. I already know what I am going to order on my next visit at Knese 🙂
And by the way, the young and open-minded service staff was very friendly and accommodating. The main dishes, mostly around 16,00€, will definitely fill you up.
