Romance Was Born hält an einer ganz speziellen Definition von Romanze fest. Man würde sich doch tatsächlich etwas höchst Liebliches unter dem Namen vorstellen. Vielleicht Blumen, Pastellfarben, filigrane Designs und Drucke. Doch dem ist nicht so bei diesem Label. Die Farben sind schrill und die Designs bringen auch nicht unbedingt die romantische Seite einer Frau hervor. Viel eher wird der Rebell in ihr gezeigt oder auch der kleine Clown.
Wenigstens wird aber genau das präsentiert, was die Kollektion verspricht – in diesem Fall Hawaii. Man muss doch zugeben, dass es kaum etwas gibt, das mehr nach Hawaii schreit, als der Bastrock. Genau dieser wird auch in die Kollektion eingeflochten und nicht nur das: Die gelben Bastfransen legen sich sogar als Kette um den Hals, wo sie erstmal wie ein Nietenhalsband wirken. Der enge Rock und die voluminöse Jacke sind aus pinken und schwarzen Baststreifen, mal lose, mal geflochten und starr zusammengesetzt – eigentlich eine rockige Version der traditionellen Gewänder.
Die hawaiianischen Kleider werden zudem mit japanischen Elementen gemischt. So werden zu allen Designs Flip-Flops mit hohem Plateau getragen und es finden sich Drucke auf den Looks, die an das japanische Theater Kabuki erinnern. Nicht umsonst heißt die Kollektion auch „Kawaii Hawaii“. „Kawaii“ ist japanisch und heißt übersetzt „süß“. Romance Was Born präsentiert in ihrer Kollektion einen echten Kulturmix – denn die Inseln Hawaiis und Japans sind zwar eigentlich nicht allzu weit von einander entfernt, doch könnten die Kleidungstraditionen kaum unterschiedlicher sein. Romance Was Born has a very special definition of romance. One actually would think of something totally lovely. Perhaps flowers, candy colors, filigree designs and prints. But this isn’t Romance Was Born. The colors are loud and the designs also don’t really show the women’s romantic side. It’s the rebel or the little clown who is shown here.
At least the collection lives up to its promise – in this case “Hawaii”. You have to admit that there isn’t anything that looks more “Hawaii” than the hula skirt. Exactly this one piece is integrated into the collection, and that’s not the only thing. The yellow hula fringes even appear as necklaces although they look like studded neckbands at first. The tight skirt and the voluminous jacket have pink and black hula stripes, sometimes loose, other times braided and rigidly assembled – actually this is a more rocking version of the traditional garments.
The Hawaiian dresses are additionally mixed with Japanese elements. That’s why you always get matching high platform flip-flops. You will also find prints which remind of the Japanese theater Kabuki. It’s not for nothing that this collection is named “Kawaii Hawaii”. “Kawaii” is Japanese and means “cute”. Romance Was Born presents a real cultural mix in their collection, because Hawaii’s islands and Japan’s islands aren’t that far away from each other, but their clothing traditions can’t be more different.
