Mountains usually tend to be either grey or monotone in color, but not in this case!

Check out the mountains of the Zhangye Danxia National Park in China. Due to all the different kinds of sandstone that have accumulated over millions of years, the mountains are not only tall (3800m) but also beautifully multi-coloured.

Due to the effect of the wind and rain, these colourful hills also have some rather unusual shapes, which only makes them even more interesting to look at. They came into being around approximately the same time as “the roof of the world” did, also known as the Himalayas. In Chinese, that geological miracle is known as “Danxa”, which means “red butt”.
