The trend tends towards board games being increasingly detailed and sophisticated, almost like analogous PC-games. Shadows over Brimstone is a good example for that .The kickstarter-project, which is now sold on shelves and online, is more detailed and deeper than some console games. But what is it all about and what makes it so cool? Read and find out!

Shadows over Brimstone is a board game by Flying Frog Production which has already developed several board games in the market. This one here is a successful crossover between Wild West and Weird Tales alla Lovecraft… hence, Weird West. The player takes on a role that is typical for the Wild West (Sheriff, gold-miner, revolver hero, etc.) and then explores an old gold mine or a swamp in search of a very special treasure…

But this is not as easy as it sounds, as portals have emerged within the tunnels / swamps, bringing beings from other dimensions into the game. Things that are too horrible to even be perceived. Now, the adventurers must face these creatures and send them back into the abyss where they came from, in order to finally get their reward. Already sounds pretty stable, doesn’t it?

Here’s the treat! For one, the figures are not simply wooden blocks, no, they are detailed miniatures which are more like models than pawns (greetings from miniature war-games). For another, each game is different from the previous, as the playing field is kept fully modular and built based on chance. Cards are always re-dealt and placed against one another and even random events can occur during the game. And, especially cool with the expansion packs, new heroes can be chosen who possess a different profile and thus follow a different playstyle.

Up till now, two different main sets are available. One of them brings us on an adventure in an old mine, the other in a swamp around the district of Louisiana.

More than just a simple board game! If you are even a little into role-playing and like Wild West action and Lovecraft novels, then this game is just made for you! The entire game costs $75 and is available on the website of Flying Frog or in well-stocked game stores (such as Battlefield Berlin).
