To escape the civilisation, at least for a while, sounds tempting for many and a deserted island is probably a dream for them. Believe me, it’s more of a nightmare. Sun, hunger, thirst and loneliness will quickly take their toll. The Swiss, Xavier Rosset, voluntarily went to a deserted island in the Pacific in the year of 2008 for 300 days, with nothing more than a machete, a table knife, a small first-aid kit and a radio station  just in case. Instead of self-discovery, the whole thing became a first-class survival trip where loneliness and hunger were possibly worst things the former snowboarder had to take care of.

But what should you take note of if you were to have a misfortune and end up stranded on a deserted island?

For a start, you should get an idea of how big your new island is. Walk along the beach so that you don’t get lost. You should only risk exploring the insides of the island once you know the approximate size of the island.

Search for fresh water! This is probably the most important; I have already written a detailed article on that. It is best to check it out again.

Food. If you are stranded on a rather tropical island, then there are hopefully enough fruits on it to fill your stomachs. If you are uncertain of what is edible or not, I have also written an article with regards to that. You could also set traps to get some animal proteins into your mouth. Furthermore, know that you are surrounded on all sides by the sea, and it is full of life. Fish with a fishing rod, traps or a spear just like how I have already described often. If it happens to be a barren island, there would most likely still be edible plants and fruits growing around. Berries, tubers and similar things grow even in rather cold regions of this world.

Sun-weather protection. Regardless of where you land, you should always protect yourselves from the weather. A sunburn can become really nasty or even painful. Believe me; the sun has enough power to burn you if you just let it be. Stay as long as possible in the shades and build a sun protection with every available material you can find.

Look for help. Take large stones and branches to write a big cry for help on the beach. SOS and Help are possibly the most common. Light the signal fire to produce the thick smoke which will draw attention to you.

The most important thing, however, is to find something to do. Besides the fight for survival, you will have lots of time to spare. When you first settle in, it could become boring really quickly, being alone and not having someone to talk to. Do not be fooled by it and lose your mind!
