The golden and colorful fall has now begun. The days are becoming shorter and the nights longer until the darkness is surrounding and encasing us … okay, okay, I’m kidding. This rather cold season full of colors isn’t that bad after all. Nevertheless, the increasing darkness does cause a kind of tristesse and melancholy. But let us embrace this sad feeling instead of fearing it! Let us go deeper into this human emotion, exploring it until we will see its incomparable beauty. Let’s watch some beautiful music videos in order to get us into the mood for the coming winter.

Here is my personal top 5 of melancholic music videos:

Lykke Li – I Follow Rivers

White snow, black trees as dark as coal, black clothing like tar and white skin – this is pure melancholy, what else would you want? If the lyrics aren’t enough to tear your heart apart, then this video will definitely suffice to make your heart turn around  in your ribcage in beautiful sad pain.

Keaton Henson – Sweetheart, what have you done to us?

Okay, let’s go through the checklist. A melancholic-looking artist guy? Check. The ocean? Check. A sunset which is marking the tragic end of the day? Check. Lyrics which remind you of the mistakes you have made and which yet are capable of taking you into a fantastic world full of beauty? Check. Yeah, welcome to melancholia hill!

Woodkid – I Love you

Broken hearts and broken landscapes … you can find these two crucial elements in this masterpiece by the masterful musician and storyteller Woodkid. In addition, you will follow the story of a young man whose sadness appears absolutely mystical. This video simply touches our heart until we can just shed bitter tears because … it is just too beautiful.

London Grammar – ‘Night Call’

Who already felt a soupcon of melancholy when listening to the original track by Kavinsky, will probably be heartbroken when exposed to the cover by our favorite indie pop band from England called London Grammar. This video is just an overdose of melancholy. But it indeed shows that sadness is something so delicate and intense at the same time that it makes you feel alive. Night Call by London Grammar is a true delight.

Agnes Obel – Rivserside

Shaky black and white photos of a lake, a dark forest, a piano and burn holes in the celluloid film. Childhood memories illustrated in a very artful way. Do I have to say more? In addition, the sun is shown now and then. But instead of warmth, we can only feel deep melancholy intensified by the bitter sweet voice of Agnes Obel.
