“I’m Irish, sir. Racism is part of my culture.”

Directed by:  John Michael McDonagh

Sergeant Gerry Boyle – Brendon Gleeson
Wendell Everett – Don Cheadle
Clive Cornell – Mark Strong

The Irish police officer Gerry doesn’t really take the law very seriously. He consumes drugs, smuggles weapons for the IRA and he likes play with prostitutes. But that is about to change when an extremely uncommon murder happened and a massive amount of cocaine was smuggled to Ireland. Now he gets reinforcement from the USA in form of the FBI investigator Wendell Everett. He is being welcomed in the most Irish ways and so it’s going to continue. You should know, in Ireland, they don’t like to talk to strangers. However, these two managed somehow to work as a team and to find out more about the smugglers.

The Guard is a black comedy with a lot of charm where they do not take themselves too seriously. The focus here is put on the amazing dialogues (or rather “non-dialogues”) and the fabulous characters who couldn’t be more different without falling into the stereotypical trap of a typical cop-movie.
