In order to end my Pokémon Column I would like to present a last Pokémon to you which may appear quite disturbing if you take a closer look at it. Alright, you’ve already met Cubone, Spoink and Drowzee – they all have two things in common: They’re quite strange and kind of scary when taking a closer look at them. And they all look cute.

However, Grimer isn’t cute at all. I admit, he’s a bit cute. This still doesn’t change the fact that he’s basically just a bunch of dirty sludge, who loves feeding on things like wastewater from factories.

An organism born from sludge, of course has a not so pleasant smell. This fact leads to the result that Grimer is full of endogenous and dangerous bacteria. It’s bacteria is poisonous for any other living organism. Whenever it touches plants, they just die and the earth on which it’s leaving its sludge behind becomes barren forever. For humans, Grimers sludge is considered a powerful toxin.

And this is not it yet! New Grimers are growing from a Grimer’s sludge! Grimer was not particularly born due to the pollution of the ocean. But still, you can perceive the social criticism which lies in this Pokémon’s existence. In fact, Grimer just embodies the fearful imagination that undesirable life which can be dangerous for nature and humankind is born due to heavy pollution because of radioactive waste.

Once again, we have proven that the supposed kids’ TV show is actually a very profound TV series which criticizes structures of our modern society in a subtle manner.

I still hope that you will stay Pokémon fans because these little pocket monsters are simply adorable. Well, as a gamer I will always remain faithful to this legendary game and anime series.
