They exist! The initially unexplainable things which actually can be explained! I’m going to solve one mystery which probably has bugged every Pokémon fan.
Anyone who played a Pokémon game or watched the series has certainly already noticed that all the Sisters Joy and Officers Jenny always look the same. Were there an original Sister Joy and an original Officer Jenny who got cloned because of a lack of qualified and skilled people after an alleged Pokémon World War? Are Ash and his friends only hallucinating? Are Pikachu and co. actually unreal and does the Pokémon world actually only exist in the dreams of a normal boy who wants to flee reality? Okay, okay. I’m sorry. I love exaggerating sometimes. Actually, the answer is pretty simple. Even though the origin of this phenomenon is just a theory of some Pokémon fans, it does really make sense and is probably true.
We already know the game was made before the manga and the anime. As perceived by the fans, the actual reason why Joy and Jenny always looked the same in the first Pokémon games is the following: At their time, the developers had only 256 Kilobytes of memory to work with – and they had to fit a rather complex game in there. There simply wasn’t enough memory on the Gameboy cartridge to make every single Joy and Jenny look different. For the ones interested: Games these days are up to 30 Gigabytes large – that’s almost 120,000 times the size of the very first Pokémon game.
The manga and anime also adapted the same looking Joys and Rockys, while the storywriters explained the absolutely identical looks with the following reason: They both come from a family in which everyone looks the same. Moreover, you can distinguish the Joys and Jennies from each other with their crosses’ colors and their emblems. Brock, who’s joining Ash on his journey, knows the crosses and the emblems so well that he can differentiate every single Joy and Jenny from each other! Okay, that reason probably doesn’t sound that plausible in the end. However, if you were an Anime producer who is constantly pressed for time, would you want to create a different character design for each and every Officer Jenny and Sister Joy which appears in the show?
