The oceans are being destroyed by rubbish, and a large-scale cleanup would cost millions of dollars. Clearing the garbage with a mesh wouldn’t work either, as this would trap and kill many fish and marine animals.

All this is set to change. 19-year-old Boyan Slat from the Netherlands has developed a great invention: floating barriers that trap rubbish, which can then easily be removed from the ocean.

As the barriers are buoyant and lie on the water’s surface, ocean inhabitants can simply swim under them. A trial version has been deployed, and Boyan is on a mission to raise funds to implement his idea in full. The best thing about his invention is that it requires zero energy input – the movement of the seas pushes the garbage into the barriers. When they’re full, scientists and volunteers will be able to collect them and empty them of trash – and that’s it!
