The Thaumoctopus mimicus or mimic octopus is a fairly strange and kind of comical animal which lives in the south regions of the Pacific Ocean. However, it has an ability which makes it differ from all the other octopus species.

It seems as if this animal is able to metamorphose, being able to turn itself into a variety of other animals considering the shape, the color as well as the movements. This behavior doesn’t only help this animal to scare off natural enemies, but it also enables the octopus to attract its preys and to camouflage. This truly makes this octopus unique. Sea snakes, squids, flounder, stingrays, fire fish, sea snails and coconuts – just to name a few of his natural disguises. And believe me, observing the mimic octopus actually transform is pure amusement as well. It looks amazing.

Another cool highlight: Since it is seen to be merely able to copy animals living in its habitat, scientists are convinced that this is no natural, inherent behavior. Instead, these are skills gained by learning. Octopodes and squids additionally are considered really smart animals – well, let’s see whether this animal will someday dominate us…
