Ordos, one of the twelve subdivisions of Inner Mongolia – a thriving city in the making, with only a few habitants so far.

When a good amount of mineral resources was discovered around Ordos, the value of the city shot up. Investors practically wrestled other to buy property, which enabled the project of building up the city to run all the more smoothly.

The more people invested in the city, the bigger the city grew. And as long as there are still enough investors, the city continues to grow bigger each and every day. This is how a city with enough space for 2 million people developed but still only 5000 people are currently living in Ordos.

With the rise in demand, the prices for the estates rose exponentially with it. For architects however, a place like Ordos is like a dream come true. They can create broad streets, skyscrapers and almost surreal looking architectural master pieces with the funds that are being pumped into the city.

Ordos2

Fountains, statues and a sea of lights are sprinkled across the streets. Despite the fact that they aren’t seen by anyone they still shine bright at night. You could wander the streets all day long without meeting another soul. You think that’s creepy? Wait until you hear this: Whenever fall is coming around, a thick layer of fog floats around town making it look like straight out of a slasher movie.

Despite all of this, Ordos is the epitome of our modern culture. Ordos is a cathedral honouring what drives and fuels our modern society: mammon.
