Have you ever wondered why Chuck Palahniuk wrote his book “Fight Club”? What inspired him to do so? Yeah …? I’m going to tell you. So, listen! There was no impulse at all. It was a causal train which led to this book. The first impulse was when Palahniuk got inflicted into a hard fight in a bar. When he then arrived at his work, he knew that everyone could see what had happened, but no one said a word. This was the point when he wanted to show how far violence could be tolerated in society.

Almost at the same time, he heard something about a celebration of the aborigines. “Takanakuy” is celebrated by the Amerindians in the province Chumbivilcas on December, 25. Each year, all villages meet each other on a certain place and start to cudgel!

First, they wear their costumes, which symbolize a kind of a totem. Then, they start a dance. After that, it’s time to fight. The whole anger which has been accumulated between the villages is unloaded on this day. Young or old, everyone has a score to settle with someone. There’s also a referee who takes care of escalations or tricks. At the end, they just continue to celebrate by drinking their strong Amerindian beer, by embracing each other. Now, they’re all friends again. Violence is rare in this region.

This concept of the fight and will inspired Chuck Palahniuk. So, he started to write “Fight Club”, before the movie was published, before teenagers in Brazilian boxing clubs fought until they die, before the college boys started to trash their faces during the lessons on Mondays, before Donatella Versage added razor blades into the menswear and naming it the “Fight Club Style” … and before he was called by a cowboy to come with him into the basement. But he never told it to anyone. That’s the first rule of the fight clubs!
