After my last victory in a hand-to-hand combat I discovered one of my biggest flaws. Although I know how to clench a fist  and where to strike to make it hurt,  I yet lack a decent fighting style. This can really come in handy when standing up against equally strong and fast counterparts.

That’s the reason why I decided to visit some of my friends, from whom I knew that they had experience in that area and asked bluntly if they could teach me a thing or two. I knew that I couldn’t turn into a warrior overnight but to know some basics would have to suffice. I ultimately decided to go for classic boxing as I have a fairly strong foothold. I also decided against kicks because those can work against you when your counterpart knows what he’s doing.

To learn the basic attitude on how to use your feet and legs during a fight was manageable. The hands however, were a whole different story. I had no idea how high your fists had to be to ensure the perfect cover. Your main hand has to be just slightly over your eyes and in case of a strike you need to make the strength from your shoulders work for your benefit. It can take time to get used to all of that but it is definitely controllable.

What I definitely can take with me are some badass punch combinations. For instance, focus on the face, hit hard and follow up with a direct strike into the belly area, when your opponent then crunches down, be sure to hit him hard in the face again. That’s at least the theory. After those few lessons I can confidently say that I know exactly where to hit and how to hit. Until my next fight I’ll be sure to train shadow boxing and jumping ropes. Future opponents, beware!
