The epitome of the term “bar” as the place of communication and encounters can be found under the sky-high canopy of the bar “Gendarmerie” in Berlin Mitte. Who takes a seat in the 10m-long und most spectacular bar in the capital and is not able to find an exciting conversation or a hot flirt on a warm summer evening, should take a look at the marvelous palette of alcoholic drinks. You can leave the outcome of the night to the impact of your alcohol consumption then.

The bacchanalian painting by the artist Yve Klein from Berlin, which dominates the dining hall, with  its size as enormous as the bar’s spaciousness, is probably the subject of many conversations ever held in Gendarmerie. Yve Klein refinded the artwork with an ax and a chainsaw for more than a year. Therefore, he rented a hall there, because his atelier in Kreuzberg wasn’t big enough for the artwork.

In the afternoon, Gendarmerie is filled with enterprising business people, while the evening is dominated by artists, actors and creative people of the Berlin microcosm.  My ultimate tip for you are the excellent lunch dishes and the outstanding wine menu. Long evenings should be spent at the elongated bar.
