There is probably no cool and hip Berliner who doesn’t know the street artist Barbara. Who is Barbara? Well, nobody knows. It’s a pseudonym. We don’t even know whether it’s one person or 10 people putting up those funny posters that you can see throughout Berlin. What’s so special about Barbara’s street art? Well, it speaks to us. In fact, Barbara puts up posters with really funny and sharp captions that often relate to the surrounding where the poster was placed in a witty way.
Often, the artist’s messages contain social criticism and satire, mainly concerning topics and problems typical of Barbara’s home town: Berlin. Racism, homophobia, inequality, the refugee problem and violence in general are put into focus in her art because Barbara is a knight fighting for love, pacifism and peace. You can compare her with Banksy, just with posters and words instead of graffiti and images. Well, most of the time her posters are just plainly funny, though.
You can’t understand her messages because you don’t speak German? Her art surely is a serious reason why you should get your ass up and take German classes! I promise.
“Hai” is German and means shark. You probably get her message now.
