Internet fans of German folklore know the following video all too well. Just in time for the upcoming Oktoberfest, I’m showing you one of the crazier sides of German folk music – The Fichtels Lied (The Spruce’s Song) by the Woodys. If you don’t speak German, be assured that they’re not singing about the true meaning of wisdom and philosophical epitaphs. It’s just a spruce tree singing cheerfully about the beauty of the woods.

The first time I watched it left me amused and shocked at the same time. I can but praise the Woodys, two joyful German guys in leather pants, for their creativity and never-dying high spirits.

Those who’ve never heard of this milestone of German folk music should really take a look at the following video. It personifies 80’s German folk music – once you’ve heard the song, the melody will be stuck in your head forever. Well, at least the song touches on important issues such as environmentalism, as the German spruce forests have stayed a spectacular natural phenomenon to this day!

That was the original version from 1984. Here’s a different version, and some brilliant chap has erased the playback and replaced it with…well. You’ll see.
