Here’s some Pokémon trivia up front: The GameBoy Game came first in 1996, the TV series first aired in 1998. Many of the sad and scary stories, which the first two Pokémon Editions told, were unfortunately not adopted in the TV show.
The ones of you who know the TV Anime show Pokémon and didn’t play the game: You should consider the following: your rival in the game is represented by Gary Oak. The rival in the game and Gary Oak have the same personality and the same story – they both want to be better than you, they both seem very smug, both live with their grandfather named Professor Oak, are very smart and apparently don’t have parents.
A really creative Pokémon turned this into a story about the rival in the game:
Of course, this is just a story written by a fan. But you have to take into consideration that this is based on real occurrences in the Pokémon game. Suddenly, a different light is shed on your rival aka Gary Oak. Suddenly, he becomes a tragic anti-hero and you are starting to ask yourself: Aren’t you the villain, after all? Again, a dark aspect emerges, emphasizing the sinister side of a game/TV show which is supposed to appeal to children.
