Lucid dreams: What are they actually? How can you do create lucid dreams?

English version

Dreaming clearly means unlimited creativity. I guess almost all of you have watched Leo DiCaprio’s movie “Inception”. Lucid dreaming is supposed to feel alike except for that you can’t take your friends with you. What is lucid or clear dreaming and how can you do it?

Lucid dreaming – derived from the Latin word “lux” or “lucis” (“light”) – is a dream in which the dreamer knows what he or she is dreaming. When he/she has reached this state, he/she can do everything that is wished since he/she controls everything. This is a technique of dreaming, which can be learned by almost everyone. One distinguishes people that pointedly dream lucidly and people that realize during dreaming that they are dreaming.

There are seven hints that mark lucid dreams. They are:

  1. The dreamer knows that he/she is dreaming.
  2. The dreamer knows his/her freedom of choice.
  3. The consciousness is clear; there are no typical confusions or disorientation.
  4. The perception of the five senses is works like while awake.
  5. You know the reality, means; you know who you are or what you have expected for the lucid dream.
  6. After the dream you remember it clearly.
  7. The dreamer knows the sense of the dream.

If you realize during your dream that you’re dreaming, which might happen because of surreal events, you can achieve to take control on your dream. It’s only important not to get scared and to accept that it’s only a dream.

  1. After you wake up, remain lying in your bed and try to remember everything that you have dreamed.
  2. Write it into a dream diary, include the date. Also give them titles. If you suddenly wake up at night, write down your dream. It might happen that you will forget it in the morning after.
  3. Write down every detail that you remember: every emotion and every feeling.
  4. Always use the same medium (notebook, PC, note …)
  5. Now, it’s time for the next step. When you dream, try to do a reality test. Read something, look at the landscape, and observe the room. You will always notice that there’s something weird. Look at a clock, look away and look at it again. It will show a different time.
  6. Close your nose. If you can still breath, you’re dreaming.
  7. Read something, the printing will disappear.

Now, it’s time to evaluate your dream diary. Many events will reappear, for example a white snake, a watch, a stairway, a black door etc. Every time you see one of these objects, try to instantly to a reality test. If it works, you know that you’re awake. If it doesn’t work, you know that you’re still dreaming. If the dream seems to crash, try to keep it alive. Scream out loud that the dream has to stay alive, rub your hands and murmur it. Imagine your own ritual. Another technique is the MILD.

  1. Go to bed; say to yourself that you will remember your dream. When you wake up, remember as many details as possible.
  2. Go to bed and tell yourself to keep control.
  3. If you now fall asleep, remember your last dream. Remember each detail and rebuild it.
  4. Repeat it until you take control.

There are many other techniques. Inform yourself at specialist shops or browse on the Internet. Now, it’s the question of what you can do in the dream. EVERYTHING!

Some tips and recommendations:

  1. Build your own city, build houses as you like. Build them at places you wish. A postmodern city at the ocean. This would be nice, wouldn’t it? In your dream it will be possible.
  2. Experience the apocalypse of the zombies without really being in danger.
  3. Transform yourself into an animal of your choice and experience the world through its eyes.
  4. Visit astral worlds and surreal places – there are no limits for your fantasy.
  5. Practice! Many painters, such as René François Ghislain Magritte, improved their drawing skills while dreaming and tried out color compositions. You can also learn complex movement sequences for sports and dances.

There are different tools that help you to dream lucidly. Different teas that can be bought at the specialized shops can help you if you drink them for a longer period. Galantine, Huperzine A, Bupropion, Propranolol, Nicotine, Choline, the amino acids L-aspartic acid, L-Glutamine and L-theanine, as well as plants such as Selene and Calea ternifolia are effective.

Dangers: Try not to get lost in your dream; otherwise it can turn into a nightmare. Always be sure to be awake, otherwise you might hurt yourself.
