This band is a real treat of hardcore music fans and besides that it’s one of my very favorite bands. Defeater aren’t touring much around Europe so I am more than glad about the upcoming concert! On stage they will be supported by the bands Caspian, Landscapes, More than Life and Goodtime Boys.

Defeater was founded in 2004 in Boston, MA by their front man Derek Archumbault. The band’s genre is classified as melodic hardcore. The boys’ music is marked by Derek’s significant vocals. In a rough, relatively high and particularly melancholic voice he sings about depressive topics like destiny, bad luck, hopelessness and long distances. Considering the technical aspect, neither growls nor screams are used also drums and guitar sound more grunge than punk.

Defeater caught my attention by their second album Empty Days & Sleepless Nights which was published in 2009 by Bridge 9 Records. On their three albums Defeater tell a story: Numerous scenes of the life of a worker family from the post-war period are described. They revolve around about straits, conflicts and calamity. Overall, Defeater are very critical of the conditions of that time. Furthermore, they tend to clarify their rejection of sexism, racism and homophobia.

Their newest album is called Letters Home and was published only a couple of months ago. I’ve only heard a few tracks of it so far but as I expected I fell in love again with that melancholic sound and I listen to the songs all day long. Defeater – a hardcore band of a whole different kind, unexpectedly sensitive and critical of society. An absolute must hear!
