When the movie drama “Spotlight” by director Tom McCartney was shown at the theaters last year, the audience and critics agreed on one thing. This movie is worthy of an Oscar. In fact, it was awarded the Oscar for Best Movie. The blockbuster deals with one specific topic that is considered so dirty that it doesn’t pass the public’s lips. What exactly is brought under the spotlight in this movie? It’s the sexual abuse of minors in the Roman Catholic Church in Boston.
However, it is an issue that needs to be talked about. What an irony, considering that the sector that is the source of the movie is also far from representing a carefree paradise for aspiring child stars who emulate actors like Dakota Fanning or Joseph Gorden Levitt. They started at a tender age to work behind the cameras and are now considered top actors. However, many do not manage to climb. One of these failed teen stars is Michael Egan III.
Michael Egan went public a few years ago in order to ridicule Hollywood. Today, he is a grown man. 16 years earlier, however, he was said to be a victim of improper sexual acts, performed by top director Bryan Singer. Also, Disney executive David Neuman and producer Gary Goddard were claimed to have acted towards him in an improper way. These accusations, if they turned out to be true, would be absolutely devastating for the three Hollywood stars.
Likewise, the public was deeply shocked when billionaire and party fanatic Jeffrey Epstein was sentenced to 18 months in prison in 2008. What did he do wrong? He pleaded guilty to have forced a minor into prostitution. One of his closest friends is also Hollywood star, Kevin Spacey, who excelled in films like American Beauty and fascinated as a ruthless politician in the political drama series, House of Cards. His fans were extremely shocked. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the flight logs of Eppstein’s private jet named “Lolita Express” prove that Kevin Spacey travelled along Epstein more than just once.
Neither Kevin Spacey nor X-Men director Bryan Singer have admitted anything in public. However, one can assume that the glamorous world of Hollywood, despite the glamor for young aspiring underage artists, is a world full of danger, where children’s naivete could lead them to become victims of the false promises of adult sex offenders.
Anyone interested in this fascinatingly shocking topic, should not miss out the documentary “An Open Secret” by Amy Berg. She does research on the deep recesses of Hollywood to find out more about cases of abuses like the one of Michael Egan.
