The United States of America are often described as a rather cultural diverse nation and as a great example for different races to peacefully coexist. But considering the so-called White Washing, this is not always an accurate depiction of the nation’s reality.

White Washing describes a phenomenon which occurs at the big dream factory that calls itself Hollywood, which is defined through the act of casting a white actor for a non-white role. A contemporary example for this is the new movie Gods of Egypt which offers a completely white cast for the traditional Egyptian roles.

But White Washing is not a phenomenon of the recent past as can be seen by classic movies like West Side Story and Breakfast at Tiffany’s , which cast white actors for non-white roles as well.

Knowing this, the controversy around this years Academy Awards makes even more sense. Let’s just hope that this crude practice will soon be a thing of the past and that America’s glorified diversity will finally reach Hollywood as well.
