While the borders between fashion and art are usually blurred, they’re entirely nonexistent in this new collection by design duo Viktor & Rolf. Their motto is “wearable art”, and it’s clear that they use their designs as canvases for their artwork. The resulting collection is not only extraordinarily artistic, but also depicts a rarely-seen side of fashion .

You can only guess how much effort they’ve put into the process of this collection’s creation. Framed paintings are transformed into dresses, skirts and tops. Sturdy materials give rise to thrilling 3D silhouettes, and the wearer becomes a dynamic canvas swathed in a literal piece of art.

Through the representation of conceived artworks, sharp jagged edges appear as style features on garments, for example on the shoulders. The avant-garde wardrobe comes with a great deal of drapery, as well as graphic elements derived from the fine arts.

The highly contrasting shift between harsh and soft textures is another feature of the collection. Here, the creativity innate in fashion and art is explored, and it’s up to the viewer to decide which one the collection embodies most – fashion, or art?
