Hello fellow beauty lovers.

At the age of 14, Crystal Renn was told that with her amazing facial features she could one day be a successful model just like Gisele Bündchen – provided she’d lose 40% of her overall body mass. So she visited the gym for 8 hours straight every day of the week and even questioned the amount of calories in bubble gum. She lost 42% of her body mass and with that most of her hair. She felt constantly sick and isolated herself from society. The turning point came when she got back from another intense workout in the gym just to be told by her agent that she should think about going on a diet despite her extremely slimmed down body. That’s when Renn decided to change her entire life. She quit her former agency, went out and started enjoying her life again. She ate actual food after months and months of only raw fruits and vegetables. In her new agency she got the chance at being a Plus-Size-Model and at a size of EU 42 she got herself back on the runways and was more successful than she has ever been before. She fought against the aggressive Size Zero standard on and off the runways and became the figurehead of the movement against anorexia.

After numerous campaigns for high-end brands like Jean Paul Gaultier, Mango, H&M, Chanel, Jimmy Choo and Dolce & Gabbana, she’s now one of the most sought after models of our times.

In the beginning of 2010 she then again lost weight through Yoga and hiking. Renn now wears a size 36/38 and that’s exactly where she wants to be. She’s of the opinion that it is time for the fashion industry to introduce the sizes 36/38 as the new standard. It would be liberating for both models and designers. For models because they wouldn’t be facing an eating disorder around every corner and for designers because they would be able to choose from a larger pool of girls. Because the fact is, with the new standard sizes both the thin and the curvier women would fit into the clothes. And if a very talented Size Zero would happen to walk in, they’d just have to make the clothes smaller, while the other way around it’s not possible.

We can see the still small but loud movement that screams for a change. We just need to ask ourselves: “For who are those magazines and products, which are presented by way too skinny girls? Yes, exactly. Those magazines and products are being made for us. Us normal women and that’s why we hold the reins. We have to ask for more diversity and we will get it if we ask for it loud enough.

Yours truly,
Lana Hoang
