Berlin! Oh, my Berlin! Is there anything culinary you can’t offer? If a Berliner gourmet does miss a thing, he will do anything to fill this gap and satisfy his hunger. Here in Berlin, the culinary establishments are competing against each other with no mercy, constantly excelling each other. Here in Berlin, vegetarian or vegan doesn’t mean that the dish loses flavor, instead it represents a different branch of the typically Berlin culinary arts. Exotic aromas which will still linger in your mouth hours after the meal are created. Often, the dishes are rustic and down-to-earth, hearty and seared at hot temperatures without airs and graces, without being overcomplicated. Divas are unwelcomed.

A piece or a slice of Berlin, a wonderful chunk of excellent meat with a big portion culinary artistic skills can be found here in the restaurant “Filetstück – Das Gourmetstück” which, as the name suggests, is devoted to the best meat part. Said establishment welcomes its customers in Prenzlauer Berg. Since 2011, Berlin-Charlottenburg has been graced with the delights this establishment produces, too.

Well, before we present the Filetstück in the Uhlandstraße, the kitchen, the joys of sitting at the special tab le No. 21 and the chef Sascha Ludwig to you, let’s take a look at what has been bugging gourmets all around the world for centuries- the question: “Does meat have sex appeal?”

Maybe, this is a rather unconventional issue. But sooner or later, as soon as you take a seat at one of Filetstück’s tables, lean back, observe the people passing by, as soon as the host Mayk Blattgerste hands you an entrecôte  just like this one, garnished with broccoli puree, snow peas, paprika and salad, this question will pop up in your head.

From 12:00-15:00 you can enjoy a lunch menu including a soda drink of your choice and an espresso for only 15€. This week, filet steaks and entrecôte are on the lunch menu. On Saturday around this time, you can even dine there for an incredible price of only 10€ thanks to the Shopping Lunch. Said Shopping Lunch offers a bratwurst made of calf meat and truffles and a glass of Chamgagne Cattier, a truly excellent Champagne, which comes from the small commune Chigny-les-Roses, representing a product of the family enterprise Cattier.

Sommelier Nicolas Spanier, who takes care of a truly considerable selection of ca. 250 wines apart from the Cattier Champagne, will do anything to offer the lucky ones who succeeded in booking table number No. 21, the prestigious VIP table of the Filetstück, a culinary explosion. Of course, Sascha Ludwig, a very experienced expert in the gastronomical field, and the charming host Mayk Blattgerste will ensure that table No. 21 will stay something special, something which is supposed to stimulate your senses. This is an experience you should see, hear, smell, feel and taste. Freshly caught shrimp seared on heated salty stone slabs as well as experiencing the art of filleting and flambéing live, watching the skilled staff sabering wine bottles filled with the juices of noble, ancient grape varieties which we thought to have gone extinct. “The passion of indulging in delights at the highest stage is what forms the bond between us three…”, said Sascha Ludwig. Amen!

Well, Sascha Ludwig is a true artist. As the chef of both Filetstück establishments in Prenzlauer Berg as well as in the Uhlandstraße 156, Sascha Ludwig is the one who holds the reins. “ The new art of preparing meat: creative gourmet kitchen without airs and graces” is the base when it comes to generating true joy on the tongue of carnivores, vegetarians and seafood lovers, when it comes to creating a feast for the eyes, the nose and the head.

The 30-year-old Sascha, who perfected his cookery skills, inter alia, at the Cologne restaurant “Gut Lärchenhof” and the famous “Quadriga” in the Hotel Brandenburger Hof, both awarded a Michelin star, even received the chance to learn at the three Michelin starred restaurant “La vie” in Osnabrück. As advocates of the dry aged steaks we welcome Sascha Ludwig in Berlin and wish him the best scenario a German chef can face: the Berlin gourmet community kneeling in the face of his cookery skills. Sascha Ludwig already took his first step towards the top of the Mt. Olympus of cookery, establishing the nutty, concentrated aromas dry aged meat in the capital city.

Let’s now once again consider the question we asked ourselves beforehand. We have found an answer: Yes, meat can indeed be sexy.

For this reason, we are going to once again pay the Filetstück in the Uhlandstraße a visit in order to try the regularly changing 7-course-menu in the shimmering light of the chandeliers, seated on comfortable wooden chairs, while peeking through the open panorama windows and waiting for our delicious dishes to arrive at our table.
