starcraft

Starcraft II is the most popular and most played real time strategy (RTS) game. It also features a really vivid pro-gaming scene. Starcraft II is especially popular in South Korea, where the top teams live in villas and altogether and make millions of dollars with tourneys.

One of the main aspects of RTS games is knowing what your rival is doing right now. Are his troops on their way to attack your base, is he getting more defense or is he building a second base?

Well, this aspect isn’t relevant with a so-called Maphack – you can see everything that’s happening on the map. Even where the enemy troops are and what he’s building in his base. For months the infamous “ValiantChaos MapHack” has been circulating, which is available for a $62.50 “donation”.

Blizzard  has now put an end to all this with a complaint. Both programmers who are held accountable for this software allegedly infringed multiple copyrights. Moreover, they are  liable for a drop in active players and revenue. Furthermore, both programmers broke multiple points of the GTC contract they both accepted in order to play Starcraft II.

According to Blizzard’s complaint, a nine-figure fine is to be paid. The hackers would’ve remained anonymous if they used Bitcoins instead of PayPal as their payment method.

In general I am glad that Blizzard is firing off a warning shot for all the future hack programmers. In the end, it’s the people like me who suffer from such hacks, because I’m not really good at Starcraft II anyway!
