Yes, everybody is looking forward to the World Cup. We’ll soon be seeing flags of all colors, thousands of people crowding Public Viewing locations and streams of beers pouring into beer mugs and countless fans and fanatic strangers passionately hugging each after after each and every goal. Our national team will be heading to Brazil on June 8 and only 4 days after that Brazil will start off this year’s World Cup against Croatia in São Paulo. On June, 16 will be our time to shine when Germany goes up against Portugal.

In Brazil, however, things are not looking that cheerful right now. Riots determine the streets of São Paulo. The people are angry. They can’t grasp why the country could spend billions of dollars to host the World Cup whilst hospitals, schools and the public transport degenerate. The nation starves behind the newly constructed stadium. According to Stern.de, people were demonstrating on the so called “International Day of the Anti-World-Cup-Campaign”, demanding equality and fairness, which the government still doesn’t give by holding up signs that say “schools and hospitals shall glow like the new stadiums”.

Truth is, most of the Brazilian people don’t mind the World Cup at all, they only hoped that this event would change their lives for the better. They yearn for the exactly same attention the state gives the new stadiums. The worst part? They were all built in cities with teams of the fourth division, which means that this artificially evoked symptoms of prosperity won’t last long after the World Cup.
