beauty pageants

Hello fellow beauty lovers.

The thought behind my weekly series labelled „Friday ChitChat“ is to bring up issues concerning “Beauty” that are often overlooked when it comes to the beauty business.

That is precisely why I wanted to introduce you to a new mini-series of mine that will address the controversial topic “Child beauty pageants”. This very subject is and will probably always be a very difficult issue, which is why it should be brought up. Four sub-topics emerged repeatedly whilst I was doing my research concerning this matter and those will be the issues I’ll be shine light on in the next four weeks.

“Life doesn’t imitate art, it imitates bad television.” This is a rather famous quote out of Woody Allen’s “Husbands and Wives” and mirrors nowadays’ reality almost perfectly. After Toddlers and Tiaras, a Reality-TV-Show in the States, it became clear how common child beauty pageants have become. Contestants at the age of 3 to 18 compete against each other in categories like “Talent”, “Interview” and “Swimwear”. Shockingly, under the division “Baby Miss” even toddlers have to compete for the crown. The entrance fee and all following costs for beauty pageants are extremely high and weigh solely on the shoulders of the little contestants as their parents rely on their victory to get the money back. The stress, as you can imagine, is severely high on the little Misses.

Former child stars like Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears or Macaulay Culkin circulate in the media more often as role models for “child stars gone bad” than for their former glory. And if even grown-ups can’t face the stress of the spotlight, how can we possibly expect children to withstand the pressure?

Questionable methods in preparations for contests and their consequences; surgeries for kids; children being seen as sex objects and the tragic murder of JonBenet Ramsey aka. Little Miss Sunshine among other things will be subjects in my mini-series. So don’t forget to tune in next week.

Yours truly,

Lana Hoang
