noah 1

I just watched the movie Noah, starring Russell Crowe. Why? I have no idea – especially not now after watching it. We initially wanted to see „Pompeii“, but it didn’t air until 11pm presumably due to low visitor numbers.

The Noah trailer did look quite interesting, which is why we decided to try it out and signed up for 138 minutes of Russell Crow.

The biblical story involves an imminent apocalypse as a penance of god for the human sins. Noah has a vision from god, in which he tells him to build an ark big enough to fit in all the animals, two from each species and his family, including his wife and his three sons. That, I believe, we all know about.

Hollywood however, put in its own twist as per usual. In this movie Noah also has a wise grandfather, who lives among the “Watchers” also known as the fallen angels. They are confined on Earth as stone golems and they detest humans.

On their way to his grandfather, Noah and his family are being chased, which leads their path to the lone survivor of a massacre in a nearby village. The girl’s severe injuries made her infertile, which later on was reversed by a sole touch from Noah’s grandpa.

After being healed she returns back to the now standing ark, where Noah’s son impregnates her with twins, what are the odds. This however, raises the temper of the second son, who also wants to have a girl by his side when the world goes down. This leads to him running away and Noah finding out, that his first son impregnated the girl. He feels compelled to kill the infant after it is born in case it was a girl. Back then he didn’t know that she is in fact carrying twins.

The second son however, manages to find a girl and tries to bring her on to the ark. She tragically gets run over by the mass of people, who await boarding the ark with their king ahead. When the flood hits, he is the only one who can hold onto the ship, leaving everybody else behind. The long awaited showdown then takes place on the ark between the king and Noah, whilst the twins make their way out into the world. Noah, of course wins and the twins, both girls, are in danger of being stabbed by the victor in order to sustain the balance of the ship. He then restraints himself and this act of mercy is being granted in form of them reaching mountain Sinai and the rainbow including the dove holding the twig. Noah then blesses his family and the movie ends then and there.

The movie is incredibly long and surmounts every possible peak. The actions are too obvious and predictable and can’t hold the interest of even the most loyal Christian for long. If you take into consideration that a big part of the American population don’t really believe in theory of evolution anyways, I could see the movie being showed in the safe quarters of a class room as it contains every single stereotype there is. Amen.
