gulag9

The GULAG was the camp and prison system of the Union of Soviet and one of their biggest crimes. Thousands of people were brought into such a camp – without any reason. There, they had to undergo the most senseless punishments for crimes that even weren’t committed. Many innocent citizens of the Union of Soviet died in these camps, but the number hasn’t been revealed until today. Those who had survived were traumatized for the rest of their lives.

One of these prisoners was Danzig Baldaev, who was born in Ulan-Ude. He had been raised in an orphanage and then had fought for his country during WWII before he disappeared in the GULAG.

In his book “Drawings from the GULAG” he is coming to terms with everything that happened in these camps. The drawings are crude, cold and recreate the hopelessness of the prisoners. Shocking, brutal and absolutely worth reading seeing – I can absolutely recommend this book.
