“I will always be by your side. I promise.”

“It’s a fog which covers a dying star. That’s why it seems to be gold. The Mayas called it Xibalbá. It was their netherworld, the place where dead souls would be reborn.”

Direction: Darren Aronofsky

Starring roles: Hugh Jackmann, Rachel Weisz

The Fountain directed by Darren Aronofsky is a masterpiece from 2006. Overwhelming pictures and a thrilling story are the main features that transform this movie into a masterpiece. It’s a movie about love, violence, religion and spirituality, myths and science, life and death. One could stop the movie at any time and would then receive a perfect image, because every moment is amazing. And this is the plot:

The movie is divided into three time levels which form a whole millennium. Each level embodies a reincarnation of the protagonists. All of them have the same elements in them, for example a tree, a ring, a couple and the fear of failing.

1535: In the first level it’s about the conquistador Tomás, who is ordered by his beloved Queen Isabel to look for the Tree of Life in the Mayas’ empire to save them from death.

2035: The scientist Tommy is desperately trying to obtain a cure from a plant in order to save his ill wife Issy from death.

2500: Tom is doing a fantastic travel through time and space to get into the center of the life and the death of Xibalbá. There, he wants to receive some clearance for all his questions. Then he realizes that the source of life is accepting the death.

These different levels resemble a network and embody the golden thread which goes through the whole plot. I promise you that you can learn a lot from this movie, especially during the hard times of life, but you will notice that life and death aren’t anything that is finite.
