It is quite astounding that the word „recycling“ is on the tip of everyone’s tongue today. I was in the third grade when I heard of this very strange term for the first time and mistook it for a kind of torture method used in the Middle Ages. Yeah, I really sucked at English then. Considering this fact, it is extremely surprising and of course delighting to see so many companies placing value on the re-use of materials.

However, there is one company which kind of took this recycling trend to the top. Cyclus  is the name of the bag brand whose birth was due to one very special object in our everyday life: the inner tubes of ordinary car tires. In the year 2000, two designers in Bogota, Columbia recognized the potential of old, worn-out inner tires with which cars have driven thousands of kilometers on Columbian roads. These shiny, black rubber-like tubes which impress with a richness of a structural diversity form the base of the bags by Cyclus.

Satchels, messenger bags, money purses, iPhone cases and even entire portmanteaus consist of this material and are able to enchant us with their different textures and profiles which appear to tell a story. Mostly completely colored in black, the models however draw attention with single, luscious color accentuations. Modern, simple, sophisticated – a principle of aesthetics from the 21st century meets a material whose look was never more important than its sturdiness. And it is good this way because you will hardly find more robust bags than the masterpieces of Cyclus.

Not every bag is completely made of inner tires. From time to time, you can discover a piece which is refined by the finest leather in addition. Furthermore, the latest main line of the brand is almost completely made of natural canvas. Nonetheless, the designers will keep creating the main part of the bags out of tires because of a simple reason. The tires themselves are composed of a material which can’t be decomposed by nature. That’s why you can say that recycling is the alpha and omega of Cyclus, a brand which truly earned its place at the Ethical Fashion Show in Berlin
