Metal Gear Rising – Revengeance (MGR:R) was in development for multiple years by the original makers of the Metal Gear Series Kojima Studios. MGR:R was due to be cancelled. Only then Platinum Games , who are too based in Japan, offered to complete MGR:R.

In February 2013, after only two years, Platinum Games managed to combine the espionage aspect from the prequels with an action that’s never been seen before in the Metal Gear Series. As an ingrained Metal Gear fan you’re already used to long and breath-taking cut-scenes – and there’s more than enough of that in this game. After all, I have to admit that I regret not trying this game before, because what many long-time fans don’t like to see is change. And yes, MGR:R indeed was different.

When the game was released, I was very prejudiced against it, which is why I only now started playing the game: While you tried to kill as few people as possible and try not to be noticed as the secret agent Solid Snake in the prequels, you now play Raiden. As Solid Snake in the prequel Metal Gear Solid 4 I got to meet a young and haughty cyborg. He’s all about fighting and cutting something with his cool sword. So this is the guy I was supposed to play in MGR:R? However, deep inside me I knew: I honestly want to play Raden who can barely be called a spy because hiding is something he probably doesn’t know how to do. As a passionate pacifist in the real world, I was eager to dive into the role of this new more bloodthirsty anti-hero.

Even though hiding and being sneaky gets quite handy sometimes, this game’s main aspect is its action alongside the huge fest of explosions, blood and flying body parts.

MGR:R tells us a story of what could have happened if the Cold War broke out. The whole human progress is now based new guns and war technology – Good to know that the main character Raiden is one of the first cyborgs to get a super modern suit in the year 2018. You get to try it out against crazy and money hungry warmongers and other enemies!

The Soundtrack which was composed just for this game, the cutscenes and the quick-time-events *(QTE) harmonize in such a wonderful way, that as a gaming-fanatic I can’t even complain about the QTEs – I really like them! Moreover, MGR:R features incredibly smooth gameplay, every single move you do harmonizes with the ones you did before – it’s just eye candy. You get non-stop action and non-stop fun from the very start to the bitter end of this game!

And the ones of you who think I’m exaggerating, take a look at this Gameplay Video (At 10:25) to convince yourselves!

*Quick-Time-Events are events where the game is briefly paused to press a button quickly in order to perform an action. For example: “Press B to kill your enemy.”
