ai weiwei
Ai Weiwei is certainly one of the most influential and important artists of China. However, he gains fame and glory only beyond Chinese soil. His art and creations were always driven by his concerns regarding the dictatorial structures of the People’s Republic of China. It is particularly the strict censorship of all media in China manipulating and suppressing the freedom of speech, sharply criticized by Ai Weiwei, inspired him again. The result: an exhibition that will take your breath away.

Evidence” is the name of the -so far- largest business exhibition of the Chinese conceptual artist, sculptor, curator and politician. From April 3 to July 13, 2014, the exhibition opened its doors for the public to look at artworks created exclusively for this exhibition. Spectacular installations, often taking up entire rooms, are currently expecting you at the Martin-Gropius-Bau.

The spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Hong Wei said: “Provocative people like Ai Weiwei must be kept in check.” And that’s what the Chinese government tried in vain. They forbade his art, threatened him and detained him. Despite these actions, the artist succeeded again creating a collection of artwork that proves: art is one of the most significant forms of social criticism.
