r&r

The Vietnamese restaurant royals & rice is the first of its kind in Berlin and celebrated its official opening in Berlin last Wednesday, after the same venue has become very successful in Münster.

The entire look of royals & rice Berlin was created by the young German-Vietnamese owner Duc Nguyen, his partners and the r&r-Team: from the plastered walls, the wooden plank of the tables that was cast in concrete or kept in stained grey to the newschool wall paintings that welcome you at the entrance of royals & rice. They used the same design concept in Berlin which includes a contrast between copper and cool grey, warm natural wood and soft leather. Industrial purism in form of concrete meets natural materials, and a harmonious look is created.

Even though the r&r has been inviting guests to their Vietnamese cuisine made in Berlin for about three weeks already, we all celebrated with a special menu made for this occasion on Wednesday. As a guest you were allowed to choose from 10 Grand Opening Specials and five sushi versions, which were conceived bite-sized and cheaply (about €4.00) in order to tease the tongue with as many tastes as possible.

r&r 3r&r 2

Yes sir, we did! The fresh, spicy broth of the Canh Chua (Fischsuppe) with salmon, tuna and prawns woke up our taste buds and was brought together with our other dishes. After having tried the exotic and wholesome Nom Chai (papaya salad), I ate the Vietnamese prok roast with crackling Heo Quay Nuong served with Cha Goi (kingrolls) filled with vermicelli, minced meat and vegetables, whose crunchy sound is still appearing in my ears. My fingers were only not quick enough for the Ga Saté, the curcuma saté chicken skewers. The others told me that they were delicious!

As a Berliner and as a new fan of the Old Berliner Sushi Rolls I can say that it was a nice evening at royals & rice, which was accompanied by live music and later on with electro music, perfect for a party ;). It’s not for nothing that the r&r is always crowded on the weekend. That’s why you should make reservations beforehand. However, it’s also worth going there during the week. The main dishes cost around €9.50 and warm up tapas cost €5.00. We can also recommend you to go there at daytime. The venue has a really nice beer garden which wants to be visited.

Beside Japanese lager beer Asahi and sweet treats like cranberry-mango panacotta you’re also offered coffe to go, including Vietnamese coffee with caramelized concentrated milk, choccocino, cappuccino, espresso, hot chocolate and lactose-free milk.

A visit pays off because of the opening offer. You can save 30% on almost all dishes til May 31. You can also get your own foldable menu, a bonus card which offers you a free dish at your choice at the 9th stamp.

Mot – hai – ba – joh!
