Yeah, every time I think that it can’t get any more disturbing, this TV series proves me wrong. “Rick and Morty” is the new baby by the TV broadcaster Aduld Swim. Well, what should I say? It really fucking blows my mind? How the hell should I describe this series to you? The entire thing is just too extreme.
Well, let’s start with the protagonist. Morty is the grandchild of the crazy and dipsomaniac genius Rick, who wants to cause chaos in the world of the “stupid” humans with the help of his inventions. Of course, it’s the humans who made him what he is today because they don’t want to accept the fact that science is the one and only essence of your life. According to Rick, life is banal and futile if people can’t even grasp the fact that there are countless parallel universes. Rick travels to the other dimensions with Morty on a regular base, often because something just went out of control and reality seems to break apart. Well, Rick couldn’t care less actually. There isn’t just one reality anyway. This exactly is his motto. Morty on the other hand is much more human. However, he still likes to take part in the adventures of his insane grandfather.
The rest of the family is scattered around the world, facing everyday problems. Morty’s big sister Summer for instance feels that she is the reason why her parents had to give up on her dreams. Puberty isn’t really helpful either. Morty’s parents are captured in a loveless marriage and don’t know any other option but drown their sorrows in alcohol and to work excessively.
As you can see, reality and the problems of everyday life clash with insanity, packed in a really good drawing style. One of the most interesting aspects: The characters stutter and stammer just like insecure teens, alcoholics and psychopaths do in reality.
