Alt-J? is an alternative pop band, which was founded in 2007 and has its origins in Leeds, UK.

Members:

Guitar, Vocals – Joe Newman
Guitar, Bass – Gwil Sainsbury
Keyboard – Gus Unger-Hamilton
Drums – Thom Green

All of them studied at the University of Leeds (arts or British literature), but after Joe Gwil had played some songs on his guitar, they decided to found a band and make music. At first, they started as “Daljit Dhaliwal” and later on as “The Films”, and gave several concerts in Leeds. Since another US-American band had the same name, they changed their name to “Alt-J?”.

The members played with the meaning of the name, because the key combinations Alt and J will turn into the symbol ? (delta) on a Mac computer. Delta as the mathematical term stands for a change, which the band has also experienced when they changed the band name.

The style of this band is quite exceptional. They play with the verses of folk music which are accentuated with synthesizer sounds and rounded up with some vocals. In addition, some hip hop elements are added – a very alternative sound.

Moreover, Alt-J? is famous for their creative music videos, which are as rich in detail as their music.

My favorite song is Breezeblocks and it has a great music video!
