Uncommon Creatures

Sometimes, the fashion world is simply unpredictable. Who would have imagined that the traditional clothing of the Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox Jewry would be considered a great inspiration for numerous designers in the modern world? The followers of this Jewish movement would have probably been the least. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of the unconventional and admittedly controversial combination of ready-to-wear and the Jewish Hasidism, we ended up stunned by the sophistication and the fascinating gloomy aesthetics resulting from these compound collections.

Below, you can find 3 outstanding collections which have been inspired by Judaism.

Jean Paul Gaultier Fall & Winter 1993

Rabbi Chic is the title of the iconic and legendary collection of the great master Jean Paul Gaultier in 1993, which hit the world like a bomb. His compositions showed up surprisingly fashionable and rocking. Even today, you’d surely look trendy in these clothes. Gaultier’s chic Rabbis were so pioneering that they can even be found in art museums nowadays.

Ricardo Seco Fall & Winter 2013

The “Alive” collection by Ricardo Seco was also obviously inspired by Hasidism. With its stunning menswear, it builds a bridge between the Orthodox faith, which celebrates knowledge and wisdom, and the modern hipster. The result is a collection that is trendy, refined and classic while surprising with an avant-garde twist.

Uncommon Creatures Debut Collection 2011

The debut collection of Uncommon Creatures impresses with futuristic, gloomy chic, which reminds of the minimalistic and sophisticated, color-reduced fashion of Scandinavian designers. It is mystical, marvelous, amazing and pretty unorthodox despite the undoubtedly orthodox touch. Uncommon Creatures’ designs would be a great hit at Berghain ;).
