This week, it’s all about the sailor trend. I’d like to start off by telling you more about the history of the original sailor suit. The uniform was worn by seafarers, and first entered the fashion world in the 1900s.

The full set consisted of pants, a top and the well-known sailor hat. Or, to be more specific: calf-length, navy blue, wide-cut pants, a top with a drill collar (on the back), and a matching hat. All of these were navy blue with white details. The typical shirt had no buttons, but was instead held shut by leather details, which, as you can probably imagine, came in rather useful on a sea vessel.

In the beginning of the 20th century, the sailor suit spread to kids’ fashion. First, it was only worn by boys, but eventually, girls also hopped on the bandwagon. However, they wore skirts instead of pants. In some countries, the sailor suit was (and still is) a model for school uniforms. It also remains popular in the marines.

Let’s thank all seafarers of bygone years for this timeless trend!
