Bunzo Kadono seems to have fallen for the iconic tartan pattern. The graduate of the Esmod Paris established himself onto the fashion market as the creative director of the brand Ambell which will present its latest collection at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Tokyo. His previous line for the fall and winter 2014 and 2015 was wonderfully feminine and experimental. A-shaped skirts and dresses as well as other feminine cuts defined the overall impression. Two crucial topics run through the entire clothing like a golden thread. Huge, rectangular sewn-on pockets at hip level and on the chest as well as checked patterns of all kinds. No matter whether it’s a cloth in which an amazing checkerboard pattern was woven into, whether it’s a quirky gingham print or a tartan pattern, every kind of checked pattern has been tried out here. The result: A clothing line which appears feminine young, fashion-forward and extremely cheerful.

His latest creations however appear much more sophisticated and mature. The cuts are less waist-enhancing and instead they are defined by a more classical, boxy silhouette. Paired with details like striped patterns, some of the creations look as if they were inspired by bygone times. You receive a very nostalgic feeling when looking at the wide, short overalls with sewn-on pockets and decorative gathers because it really reminds you of petticoats which used to be worn by all women in the past. Indeed, you can spot vintage designs everywhere in this collection, which is again characterized by the characteristic tartan pattern which forms a very impressive contrast to the opulent brocade fabric used in a knee-length coat for instance.

Who prefers a more classical look with spectacular retro elements will surely fall in love with Ambell’s spring and summer collection 2015.
