Hello fellow beauty lovers.

Let’s start off the year with a brand new trend that’s getting more and more popular by the day! I’ve been noticing a slight shift regarding our hair. “Granny Chic” is the new trend we now get to experience. Grey seems to be the new blond because one thing we can definitely count on: If style icon Rihanna declares something as “trendy”, you sure as hell can bet that this will be just that in a couple of weeks. She actually said that blondes really have to watch their bottoms because the “Granny Chic” is already much more en vogue as the former Barbie look. But she wasn’t the only one, who posted her glorious self with her new mane. Celebs like Lady Gaga, Kelly Osbourne, Pink and Kylie Jenner also rock ashy hair colors.

But what exactly happens during the bleaching of our hair? Well, it is widely known that the actual color in our hair is a result of melanin. Therefore the darker the hair, the more melanin you have in your hair. If you have the desire to bleach your hair to get a very bright and light color, you’ll definitely come across hydrogen peroxide. This will soften the outer part of your hair follicle and enable the chemicals to enter it, where they then oxidizes with the melanin. What’s left is a colorless substance, which then leads to light hair. The fact that this method basically destroys what you once called your hair seems to be negligible because, well, many people are willing to bleach their hair following the motto “You only live once”. It’s definitely an eye catcher provided you know how to wear silver/grey hair. For me, I love this trend. I absolutely love and am utterly smitten with the ashy look but I simply don’t have the means and the time to upkeep it as an Asian with strongly pigmented hair.

But if you do and if you’re on the lookout for a complete makeover – go for it. I’ve been browsing the net to see if I could come up with the right products for you to get a head start into all of this. And because L’oréal has been the world market leader in the beauty industry, it’s hardly a surprise that they had the right products in store. You could use the L’oréal Luocolor in P01 hair dye in the lightest shade, provided you don’t have naturally extremely dark hair which is very hard to bleach. And for the silver sheen, use the Silver Shampoo, which is also by L’oréal Professional. However, keep in mind that the Silver Shampoo just gets rid of the yellowness in already blond or light hair. If you aim for a clearly grey color, then you have to resort to a real grey coloration. In general, I recommend consulting an experienced hairstylist if you want to achieve a good result.

What do you think about the “Granny Chic“– HOT or NOT?

Yours truly,

Lana Hoang
