Director: Isao Takahata

Isao Takahata’s movie „The Princess Kaguya“ is based on a Japanese folktale and tells the story of a young princess who was raised by a farmer family and grew up to be a beautiful woman. Of course, even the noblest courted her. This movie is probably the visualized farewell of the legendary Studio Ghibli because now the second co-founder is, too, stepping back from the business. Nevertheless, he at least leaves us a wonderful and fantastic movie about the legend of the moon princess, a beautiful masterwork marked by valuable poetic and artistic influences from my point of view.

After moving from the countryside to the city, the moon maiden that grew up in the bamboo forest is overwhelmed by bitter, almost beautiful sadness. Melancholy is lingering on this movie just like many pieces of the Studio Ghibli. However, this anime movie is different. It’s the minimalist and almost two-dimensional style which makes Princess Kaguya stand out. Nevertheless, this little gemstone is worth watching.

The movie hit the German cinemas on November 20, 2014.
